Simon O'Brien Minister for Transport; Disability Services
A $2million contract has been awarded to carry out widening works on a 2.5km section of Muirs Highway, connecting Manjimup and Mount Barker.
Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said the project would include substantial earthworks; construction of a new pavement layer; sealing of the road; new signs and line marking.
“Muirs Highway provides an important connection between Manjimup and Mount Barker and provides access for the agricultural and forestry industries operating between these towns,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The 4.5km long Perup section of the highway is the only remaining section with a 3.7 metre wide sealed surface. It is not wide enough for centre lines to be installed and vehicles are forced to drive partially on the unsealed shoulders when overtaking.
“This type of road environment increases the risk of a serious crash which can lead to significant social and economic costs to the Western Australian community.”
The project would enable the highway to be widened to provide an eight metre-wide seal and realigned to eliminate several sharp bends and crests.
The Minister said the completed works would significantly improve safety for road users.
Southern Roads Services were awarded the $2.07million contract and construction of the 2.5km 2010 upgrade is due to commence in January and be completed by March.
“It is anticipated that the remaining 2km section of narrow seal will be widened during the 2010-11 financial year,” he said. |
