February 05,2010 - Construction of Cobram’s new $3 million medical and dental clinic is progressing well.

Construction of Cobram’s new $3 million medical and dental clinic is progressing well.

Inspecting progress of the building, Health Minister Daniel Andrews commended the project and said it would it ensure Cobram district residents continued to access the very best health services.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to give Victorians a better health system by building new hospitals and hiring more doctors and nurses,” Mr Andrews said.

“This $3 million development means local families will have first-class health facilities, close to home.”

Mr Andrews said the new clinic would bring medical and dental services under the one roof by co-locating Cobram District Hospital’s existing medical clinic with the Cobram Dental Clinic, which is presently located off-site.

“The new clinic will house nine medical consulting rooms, four treatment rooms and five dental chairs,” he said.

“The clinic will act as a training centre for Melbourne University’s medical and dental students which will hopefully encourage some students to practice in rural areas after they graduate.

“Our Government is committed to providing the best possible healthcare for all Victorians, regardless of where they live.”

During the visit, Mr Andrews announced a 1 per cent funding increase for small rural hospitals, which will give an additional $50,000 to Cobram.

Mr Andrews also commended the Cobram community for its broad support for the new clinic.

“It is heartening to see contributions made by local groups including the Barooga Sports Club, Cobram Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the hospital’s foundation,” he said.

“This project is further confirmation of Cobram District Hospital’s willingness to provide a diverse range of services to meet the health needs of local people.”

Member for Northern Victoria Kaye Darveniza said Cobram District Hospital treated more than 5100 patients in the last financial year.

“The medical clinic treated more than 41,000 patients, and more than 6000 attended the dental clinic,” she said.

“That’s why the Brumby Labor Government provided record funding of more than $5 million to Cobram District Hospital this year, up $160,000 on last year and an increase of 67 per cent in the past 10 years.”
