Specialist engineering, construction and asset management contractor, Bilfinger Berger Services, has secured one of the two large contracts with Powercor Network Services to roll out more than 1.1 million smart electricity meters across the CitiPower and Powercor Australia electricity networks serving inner Melbourne and western Victoria.
Three million electricity meters currently installed in homes and businesses across Victoria will be replaced with new smart meters in a world-leading project mandated by the Victorian Government. The smart meters will streamline the collection of billing data from energy consumers, allow for remote reading of meters, provide more timely notification of power outages and monitor power quality.
In addition to the meter replacement works, Bilfinger Berger Services has been contracted to provide maintenance and fault rectification services for the smart meters.
“Bilfinger Berger Services has worked closely with CitiPower and Powercor for 12 years on network maintenance and augmentation,” said Bilfinger Berger Services Executive Director, Infrastructure Services, David Tucker.
“This year our company marks 60 years of service to the Australian power industry, and this latest contract puts us at the forefront of bringing this new technology to consumers on behalf of electricity retailers.”
Bilfinger Berger Services will expand its Richmond depot and employ additional staff to manage the new workload, including project managers and field personnel.
Bilfinger Berger Services is working closely with Powercor Network Services to plan the roll-out of the meters, which will begin later this year. |
