Blackwood Station upgrade begins

June 26,2009 - Work is now underway on a $4 million upgrade of the Blackwood Railway Station as the State Government’s public transport revolution continues.

Work is now underway on a $4 million upgrade of the Blackwood Railway Station as the State Government’s public transport revolution continues.

Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said the work is part of the Belair line renewal, which is nearly complete with 5 kilometres of new track now in place.

“The upgrade of Blackwood Station will complement the vastly improved, reliable and comfortable service we are delivering for hills rail commuters,” he said.

“Work will include refurbishing the pedestrian overpass, improving access ramps and installing a new shelter with open sight lines to improve safety and security.

“Tactile ground surface indicators are also being installed along with enhanced lighting and undercover seating.

“All of these works will benefit the community as a whole but are particularly important to commuters with disabilities and the vision impaired.

“In addition, the Park’n’Ride facility is being expanded to accommodate an extra 40 vehicles and the station’s heritage buildings will undergo sympathetic restoration work.

“Renewing the Belair line is a key component of revitalising the metropolitan rail network through the Rann Government’s unprecedented $2 billion investment in the public transport system.

“We are upgrading the track formation, improving stormwater drainage and improving the track alignment on the Belair line.”

Preliminary works are currently underway, with the station upgrade anticipated to be complete by late 2009.

Upgrades of the Coromandel and Eden Hills stations will include:

  • Improvements to access ramps;
  • Installation of tactile ground surface indicators on the platform;
  • Upgraded seating;
  • Fencing and maze-way improvements;
  • Lighting and signage upgrades.
