The approval of a $14.5 million social housing development in Bentleigh will ensure more vulnerable Victorian women have access to safe, affordable and well-located accommodation.
Planning Minister Justin Madden has approved the project in Corbie Street, which will create up to 44 construction jobs.
“This development, to be operated by Women’s Housing Limited, will house women already living in the local community who want to remain close to their family, friends and work,” Mr Madden said.
The project includes 49 one and two bedroom apartments specifically designed for a mix of women and families, some at risk of homelessness and others on low incomes.
“This development demonstrates our recognition of the need for more affordable housing in areas of high demand across Victoria,” Mr Madden said.
“The Brumby Labor Government is delivering affordable, safe, secure and well-designed housing options which are located close to transport, services and jobs.
“It is important that as a community we support our most vulnerable neighbours and through this project and the ongoing assistance from Women’s Housing Limited, these tenants will have good quality housing that is well located, close to opportunities and employment.”
Mr Madden said the Social Housing Initiative committed the Brumby Labor Government to providing an additional 3450 social houses by the end of 2010.
“Melbourne is projected to grow by 1.26 million people over the next 20 years, so it’s vital that we have the housing, services and local amenities to support all members of the community,” he said.
“A major aim of our planning policy is to ensure the continued renewal of public housing options that better meet the needs of the community.
“The Brumby Labor Government is determined to make public housing a more desirable place for Victorian families to live, with improved amenities and access to social networks.” |
