An in-principle agreement for a $550 million upgrade to the M2 has been reached by the NSW Government and Transurban, owner of the Hills M2. Minister for Transport, David Campbell, welcomed the news as the upgrade would reduce peak hour congestion and provide new access points for Sydney’s north-west.
The upgrade is expected to commence in 2010 and be completed within two years. It will be funded by Transurban, and will be complemented by the NSW Government extending the M2 concession by four years.
The upgrade will include the following improvements:
- Widening Lane Cove Tunnel in both directions
- Widening between Lane Cove Road and Beecroft Road to reinstate 3.5 metre traffic lanes and 2.5 metre breakdown shoulder
- Reinstating the westbound emergency breakdown lane between Lane Cove Road and Beecroft Road
- An additional eastbound lane between Windsor Road and Pennant Hills Road, and Pennant Hills Road and Lane Cove Road through the M2 Tunnel
- An additional westbound land from Beecroft Road to Pennant Hills Road
- New Christie Road eastbound on ramp and Herring Road westbound off ramp
- New Windsor Road west facing on and off ramps
A thorough environmental assessment will be prepared for the project, which will be put on public display for feedback. |
