Hundreds of local construction jobs are on offer for the $759 million Peninsula Link project, Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas announced today during an inspection of the Abigroup project office in Seaford.
Joined by Member for Frankston Alistair Harkness in Seaford, Mr Pallas said while construction work had started on the ground earlier this year, it was now the perfect time for local people to register their interest for labour jobs ahead of major earthworks.
“The Brumby Labor Government is building a better transport system with projects such as Peninsula Link that is providing local jobs and will slash travel times so people can spend more time with family and friends and less time in traffic,” Mr Pallas said.
“There are already around 150 people working on the project and we’re calling on local people interested in working on Peninsula Link to contact Abigroup and register their details for future opportunities.
“About a third of contracts let so far are local to the area and now we’re looking for more carpenters, concreters, fencers, drainage engineers, heavy equipment operators and general labourers.”
The Peninsula Link site is starting to take shape with Abigroup making progress on detailed design work and site establishment in the first half of the year.
Its site office in Seaford will house around 170 workers and is one of several being established along the project corridor with other offices to follow at Cranbourne Road and the southern end of the job.
Mr Pallas said as part of the Government’s strong focus on environment during construction, it was also investing in a number of improvement projects in the Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve.
“We recognise the Pines Reserve has important environmental values and we’ll soon be calling for tenders to revegetate 16 hectares of the reserve to improve habitat for animals,” he said.
“The Peninsula Link project is undertaking weed management and predator control work in the reserve as part of the strategy to preserve native flora and fauna.
“This is in addition to the 1.5 million shrubs, trees and grasses being planted along the corridor, improvements to local waterways and new wetlands being created along the 27 kilometre route.”
Mr Harkness said Peninsula Link was on track to open in early 2013 and would make travel and life much easier for local drivers and tourists.
“This new major, toll-free, road link will deliver improved road safety, environmental sustainability and unique urban design, and will allow people to travel from Carrum Downs to Mt Martha in just 17 minutes – a massive saving of up to 40 minutes,” he said.
People wanting to register their interested in working on the project should call Abigroup on 1300 453 035 or visit http://www.peninsulalink.com.au
