Port Pirie residents have a revamped swimming spot in time for the holiday season, following today's official opening of the $1 million upgraded Port Pirie Swimming Pool.

Senator for South Australia Annette Hurley was on hand today with locals and officials from Port Pirie Regional Council to officially open the revamped pool.

Senator Hurley launched the project to coincide with the local community swimming club exhibition time trials, and a free open day for children and families to take a splash and try the upgraded facilities.

Federal Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Minister Anthony Albanese said that as part of our Economic Stimulus Plan, the Rudd Labor Government provided the Port Pirie Regional Council with $635,000 for the project.

"The money was used to reline the 50 metre pool, provide a level deck edge, install new inlet and return lines, replace the pool tank and install new lighting," Senator Hurley said.

"The pool, built more than 40 years ago, will no longer have major problems associated with leaking, rusted pipes, and looking outdated, the renovations have improved the overall presentation of the facility."

The project employed five people during construction.

Mr Albanese said that all up, Port Pirie Regional Council had so far received over $3 million from the $1 billion Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, a key part of the Economic Stimulus Plan.

"In partnership with every council in the country we are delivering more than 3,300 small and larger scale building projects, including new and refurbished public libraries, sporting facilities, parks and playgrounds, and child care centres.

"In fact, we're making the single largest federal investment in community infrastructure," Mr Albanese said.

The Program's remaining $220 million will be made available to councils in coming months, with the Port Pirie Regional Council set to receive at least $252,000.

This additional funding will support even more local jobs and rebuild even more of the nation's vital community infrastructure.
