Victoria’s investment in major infrastructure projects has reached an all time high with construction activity up 3.4 per cent for the June quarter, while the national average declined.
Engineering construction work in Victoria increased by 9.5 per cent during the June quarter while the residential building market increased by 3.7 per cent.
Treasurer John Lenders said these figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the Brumby Labor Government’s response to the global financial crisis was working.
“The Brumby Labor Government is focussed on doing all we can to secure jobs for Victorians in a tougher global environment,” Mr Lenders said.
“Investment in large infrastructure projects creates jobs, stimulates the Victorian economy and fights the impact of the Global Financial Crisis.”
Mr Lenders said more than 1500 new homes were constructed in Victoria in July alone with assistance from the First Home Owners Grant, which is the most generous first home owner payments of any Australian state.
“These payments do more than just help families into their first home – they help to create jobs for Victoria’s carpenters, electricians, builders, plumbers and many others,” he said. Major infrastructure projects recently completed or underway across Victoria include:
- $3.5 billion Desalination Project
- $2 billion Food Bowl Modernisation Project and $750 million Sugarloaf Pipeline;
- $1.9 billion investment to rebuild, renovate or extend every Government school;
- $1.39 billion Monash-CityLink-West Gate Upgrade;
- $1 billion new Royal Children’s Hospital; and
- $969 million Channel Deepening Project.
