Gerry McCarthy Minister for Construction
Construction on a new rock wall to protect the Darwin Sailing Club and Trailer Boat Club from being washed away will begin next week.
Infrastructure Minister, Gerry McCarthy, and the Member for Fannie Bay, Michael Gunner, today announced that local company Ostojic Group have been awarded the tender to build the new rock wall.
“There’s nothing better than sitting back to enjoy a cold drink and a Darwin Sunset at the Sailing or Trailer Boat Club,” said Mr McCarthy.
“This Government investment of $1.6 million will protect these two Territory icons and ensure locals and visitors alike can continue to enjoy a great Territory tradition.
“To complete the work the boat ramp at the Darwin Trailer Boat Club will be closed from today until the end of March and access to the beach will be restricted.”
Mr Gunner said the short term inconvenience was worthwhile considering the new rock wall will provide long-term stability for the section of foreshore in front of the two clubs.
“We get some rough weather in the Darwin over the cyclone season, but the new rock wall will ensure the two clubs are protected from erosion and severe storm damage.
“This means people will be able to continue enjoying the clubs to relax, access the boat ramps and participate in water sports and outdoor activities.
“I’m one of many people who love kicking back at the Sailing or Trailer Boat club and it’s great to see this work get started to protect both clubs from being washed away.” |
