Minister for Main Roads The Honourable Craig Wallace
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said today that work was being carried out on a number of dangerous intersections in Queensland.
Minister Wallace said 20 intersections in Queensland a mix of state and council-controlled roads had recorded a high number of incidents over the past three years.
Theyre all busy intersections with high volumes of traffic. We take road safety seriously and thats why were rolling out a record $3.53 billion this financial year to upgrade our roads, Mr Wallace said.
1.Gold Coast: Bermuda Street/Markeri Street $600,000 worth of improvements to start in July. $400,000 will also be spent next year on better street lighting, right-turn lanes and signage. Serious incidents: 10
2.Gold Coast: Hooker Boulevard/Southport Burleigh Road - $1.5m has been set aside for improved traffic signals, gantry signs, better street lighting and line marking and anti-skid treatments. Serious incidents: 10
3.Brisbane City: Queen Street/Wharf Street/Eagle Street Brisbane City Council road. Serious incidents: 10
4.Gold Coast: Toolona Street/Gold Coast Highway A $4 million project that includes work to upgrade the intersection is expected to get underway mid year. Serious incidents: 9
5.Cairns: McCoombe Street/Mulgrave Road The intersection was upgraded two years ago to make it safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists as part of the $17.9 million upgrade of Mulgrave Road. There have been no reported accidents since then. Serious incidents: 9
6.South Brisbane: Grey Street//Melbourne Street Brisbane City Council road. Serious incidents: 9
7.Gold Coast: Nind Street/Johnson Street Main Roads is monitoring the intersection. Serious incidents: 8
8.Brisbane: Fison Avenue West/Gateway Motorway Off Ramp Work will be carried out as part of the $1.88b Gateway Upgrade. Serious incidents: 8
9.Cairns: Redlynch Connector Road/Cairns Western Arterial Road Improvements were carried out at the intersection two years ago, including a protected right turn. There have been no reported accidents since those changes. Serious incidents: 7
10.South West Queensland - Warrego Highway/Villis Road/Fielding Road An $800,000 safety upgrade was completed earlier this year. Serious incidents: 7
11.Brisbane: Waterworks Road/Western Arterial Road A $100,000 upgrade was carried out two years ago to upgrade the signal lanterns and improve pedestrian ramps. Serious incidents: 7
12.Brisbane: Mt-Gravatt-Capalaba Road/Gateway Arterial Road On/Off Ramp A planning study is underway at a cost of $9m, jointly funded by the federal and state governments. Serious incidents: 7
13.Brisbane: Marshall Road/Bapaume Road/Birdwood Road, Tarragindi. This is a Brisbane City Council road. Serious accidents: 7
14.Townsville: Duckworth Street/Townsville Port Road This section of the National Network is now a state government responsibility, due to opening of the Townsville Ring Road. Changes to traffic volumes and flow will be assessed as part of the opening of the Ring Road. Serious incidents: 7
15.Fortitude Valley: Ann Street/Gipps Street/Kemp Place/Bradfield Highway. This is a Brisbane City Council road. Serious incidents: 7
16.Fortitude Valley: Kemp Place/Bradfield Highway/Martin Street. This is a Brisbane City Council road. Serious incidents: 6
17.Proserpine Shute Harbour Road/Conway Road/Camm Road $200,000 in safety improvements have been carried out at the intersection. Serious incidents: 6
18.Brisbane: Tilley Road/New Cleveland Road, Gumdale. This is a Brisbane City Council road. Serious incidents: 6
19.Marsden: Chambers Flat Road/Tamarind Street/Bourke Street, Marsden. This is a Logan City Council road. Serious incidents: 6
20.Townsville - Ross River Road/Balls Lane/Cross Street Main Roads is monitoring this intersection. Serious incidents: 6
Mr Wallace said motorists should always take the utmost care while driving on any road.
