Minister for Infrastructure and Planning The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe
Queensland Dam Consortium has been appointed to build the $348 million Wyaralong Dam near Beaudesert, a project that is creating 420 jobs.
Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchcliffe said Queensland Water Infrastructure Pty Ltd (QWI) made the appointment following a rigorous tender evaluation.
"We're fighting for every Queensland job we can and Wyaralong Dam is overflowing with work," said Mr Hinchliffe.
"The Queensland Dam Consortium will hit the ground running and provide up to 40 jobs over the next month with detailed design and site investigations.
"Major construction work will start by the end of the year and the workforce will peak by mid next year.
"This is a high calibre team with significant experience in the delivery of hundreds of dam projects around the world.
"Wyaralong Dam will be built by mid 2011, featuring a 500 metre long wall with a maximum height of 48 metres."
"Working in conjunction with the nearby Cedar Grove Weir, it will provide an extra 21,000 million litres of water every year, enough for close to 300,000 people.
"I hope to see many of the 100 staff and sub contractors already hard at work on the access road to pick another job working on the construction of the actual dam.
"Since late last year 150,000 cubic metres of earth has been shifted and a 9km temporary pipeline installed.'
Moxy truck driver and local resident Daniel Macnellie is currently working with the WISA Alliance on the Wyaralong Dam Access Road and is thrilled at the prospect of continuing work in his area.
"I originally got work on the Bromelton Offstream Facility after leaving the dairy farming industry," said Mr Macnellie.
"I have a wife and two young children so I'm stoked that I'll be able to continue to work 10 minutes from home and see them every day for the next couple of years."
QWI Chief Executive Officer Graeme Newton today also announced that leading civil contractor firm Fulton Hogan has been appointed as preferred contractor for the upgrade to the Beaudesert-Boonah Road, as part of the Wyaralong Dam project.
"Fulton Hogan are delivering some of South East Queensland's major road infrastructure improvements, including the Centenary Highway (South-West Transport Corridor Package D), Maroochydore Road (Stage 2) and Caloundra Road Duplication Project," said Mr Newton.
"This part of the project alone will employ around 75 people.
"The road realignment will improve travel times from Boonah to Beaudesert and increase safety for the estimated 1,600 commuters that use the road daily."
